CHAPTER EIGHT

The police files of the three murder victims before Adrian Foley said nothing further about them other than who they were and what their chosen area of profession was. The first victim, Horace Bailey, was a sixty-year-old moderately rich banker who lived in the northern area of Maple Junction. Not too many details were documented in the file about the man, except that he was survived by a wife, Glenda, almost half his age from his third marriage.

The second victim, Patrick Moorcock, murdered in almost the same fashion around three months after Bailey, was a middle-school teacher aged forty-one. He was survived by his wife, Daisy, and stepson, Matt. And the third, a businessman of fifty by the name of Edmond Borden, was found by his cousin brother, Clifford, poisoned to death in a similar manner as Bailey and Moorcock. Mandy found no further information about them in the police reports.

Each of the victims, including the recent Adrian Foley, were men who were set in life and other than Foley, had families who depended on them, and who could, in a way, benefit from their deaths. But that wouldn’t mean that their families could do that to them. More importantly than that, these three victims were likely to own shares in any company, including Winston and Sons.

"What I have to do to find that out is get to the head office of Winston and Sons and ask to have a look at the shareholders register," Mandy murmured to herself, making Mitzy perk up her little ears. "Mister Winston did say that I could speak to his assistant George at the office if I need to."

Mitzy leaped to her feet and down from the bed, excitedly wagging her little tail at the prospect of going outside. Shaking her head with a smile, Mandy put away the files and stepped over to her wardrobe to get ready. Within a half hour, she picked up her satchel with one hand and Mitzy with her other arm and stepped out of the flower shop. Crossing the street, Mandy entered the police car, smiling at Officer Hanley as he held the door open for her.

“Where to, Miss Quentin?” the ruggedly handsome policeman asked her, smiling back.

“To the Winston and Sons head office, Officer,” Mandy replied as she settled into the back seat. “Do you know where it is?”

"Down at the west end of Maple Junction," Hanley told her as he started the car and pulled onto the street.

“How far is it from here?” Mandy asked, holding on to the very excited Mitzy.

“Not too far,” the police officer replied, “just about a ten minute drive.”

Ten minutes was just about right as the police car pulled up in front of the tall building that served as the head office for Winston and Sons. Another squad car was already parked and waiting as Mandy stepped out. Officer Kendra Lubbock walked up to her with an extended hand.

“Good morning, Mandy.” Lubbock was smiling. “Got here as soon as Wayne radioed me.
